Today there are many ways to entertain yourself in your free time. Many are engaged in their favorite hobby, and someone combines business with pleasure and is engaged in a serious craft. Among such hobbies is the assembly and manufacture of furniture or furniture panels. In fact, the process is quite simple and does not require special costs. A wooden furniture shield can be made independently if you have the necessary material and tools at hand. From ready-made wooden panels, you can make a ceiling, wall sheathing, window sills, doors and furniture. Such a building material has strength and aesthetics. The cost of boards depends on the type of wood, category, length and width and can range from 400-500 rubles per square meter to several thousand.
What do you need to make?
Wooden shields can be easily made with all the supplies on hand. So, what materials and tools will be needed for this:
- Milling machine.
- Circular saw.
- Hammer.
- Drill.
- Electric Planer.
- Surface and belt grinders. Also, wood can be cleaned with ordinary emery cloth by screwing the material onto the block. However, this method takes moretime.
- Gausmus.
- Meta measure, pencil, long enough metal ruler.
- Clamps.
- Thin slats and plywood.
- Lumber.
Preparation for work
When all the tools and materials are prepared, you can get to work. In order for furniture wooden panels to turn out, it is worth carrying out preparatory measures. First of all, it is worth deciding on the size of the future product. This will allow you to purchase the required amount of material. In any case, the blanks must be not only long, but also thick enough. It is worth considering that finished wooden panels are smaller in parameters than the original material.
Boards should be chosen only dry, with a small number of knots and even. Wood must be of the same species. When choosing a source material, do not forget about the properties of the material.
Carpenter's Dictionary
If you are new to carpentry, then you need to remember a few basic names to avoid confusion in terms:
- Lamels are unspliced, whole blanks.
- Plots are individual planks and bars that have been sawn from a wide board.
- Plasti is the longitudinal wide side of the board.
- Curl - this concept characterizes the random arrangement of wood fibers in the harvest. A similar phenomenon often occurs when the material is sawn from the butt of a tree.
- Sapwood is the outer layer of wood, which is immediately under the bark.
Choose the right material
In order for wooden panels for furniture to be of high quality, it is necessary to carefully select the material. For such products, according to experts, it is better to take plots that have a thickness to width ratio of 1:3. Such a material is more stable, since the internal stress in the wood is simply not enough to split the workpiece. Probably, many saw slats along the edges with cracks. These are exactly the cases when internal stress has increased as a result of improper drying.
Material preparation
First of all, it is necessary to dissolve the lumber into slats, the width of which is about 15 centimeters, but no more. At this stage, all defects that are present on the boards should be removed.
Before you assemble a wooden shield, the price of which in the store is impressive, you must take into account that during drying the material can warp in completely different directions. When assembling products from such boards, you need to be careful. There are several directions: radial and tangential. In the first case, the material warps along the core lines, and in the second - along the annual rings.
Simple rules
To connect the boards, you need to follow a few rules:
- Sapwood is fused with sapwood, and heartwood with heartwood. This method of connection avoids warping of the shield during its drying, during which the strength of adhesive joints decreases.
- Material withpronounced tortuosity should be oriented along the line of annual rings. This will further reduce the deformation of the finished product.
How to make a wooden shield for furniture?
Making wooden shields is very simple. First you need to place the material in the right direction. In this case, it is worth achieving the optimal location of all annual rings. On each blank, you need to make notes so that you can then reassemble the shield. After that, the ends of the boards should be planed before gluing.
Prepared lumber should be folded into a pack, and then smeared with glue on the edges. After that, the plots should be wrapped with polyethylene. This will prevent the glue from setting quickly. Wooden shields can now be assembled.
It is better to tighten the finished product with a clamp. Now the shield must be thoroughly dried. Of course, this stage will take a lot of time. The product must dry well. After complete drying, the wood can be given a more attractive appearance. The finished shield must be sanded. At this stage, you can also remove the remaining glue.
How to avoid warping?
To prevent the finished product from deforming, you should resort to a few tricks. Warping caused by frizzy material can be de alt with in the following way.
To do this, you can glue the lamellas on the dowels or using the final tip. This will reduce the deformation. To fix short boards, you can use a lug with a locktongue-and-groove.
There are other ways to connect the lamellas, which depend on the conditions in which the finished product will be used. When making a wooden shield, this factor should be taken into account.
