Plywood is one of those materials that is easy and pleasant to work with. Its application is very wide, and it is suitable for the production of almost any item of home interior. Making plywood furniture with your own hands will find good use at home. Thanks to hand-made execution with plywood, a wide variety of design solutions can be realized. And in view of its environmental friendliness, this material makes a wonderful bedroom or children's furniture. After all, plywood is of natural origin, made from pine and birch. With such furniture, it is also important to preserve the family budget, since the cost of plywood is relatively low, and you will not have to pay for the work of craftsmen for cutting material and assembling furniture. After listing the advantages of plywood, let's move on to describing its practical application using specific examples.

Making home furniture from plywood

If you already have an unequivocal decision to make your own interior creation, then in addition to choosing the right plywood and delivering it to your home, you need to take care of the tool and complete the drawing before starting work. It is preferable to take the finished drawing, so as not to make mistakes in the calculations. In case of error, all efforts will be expendedin vain, and part of the material will be hopelessly damaged. A properly drawn up drawing, on the contrary, will help you not to buy too much.

Tools

For the construction of plywood furniture, special equipment is not required. You will need:

  • ruler;
  • roulette;
  • angle;
  • knife, jigsaw or circular saw;
  • drill;
  • sandpaper;
  • nails, screws, bolts;
  • screwdriver or screwdriver.

Main nuances when performing work

In order to prevent waste of time, effort and damage to the material, some basic rules should be stipulated before starting work with this material:

  1. Plywood up to 1.5 mm thick is cut with a knife. If the thickness reaches 6 mm, then a jigsaw is used. If more than 6 mm - circular saw.
  2. Plywood is cut only parallel to the fibers, otherwise it may crack. This can be prevented by using cuts made with a knife parallel to the cutting line.
  3. To fasten plywood with nails, self-tapping screws, screws or bolts, pre-drill holes for them so that a crack does not appear at the fastening site. It is even better to use washers under the caps.
  4. To bend the material, the sheet is pre-wetted and fixed for 12 hours.
  5. To glue plywood, you need to prepare the surfaces by sanding them with sandpaper. After applying the glue evenly, the plywood is firmly pressed until the glue is completely dry. The fibers of the sheets to be glued must be parallel. Adhesive if exposed to moisturemust be moisture resistant.
  6. In case of delamination of plywood sheets, paper is used as a spacer when gluing.

Plywood bed

Perhaps one of the most popular types of furniture is a bed, so let's consider the use of plywood on this example. In the manufacture of home furniture from plywood, a wide variety of fantasies and design variations are possible. In this case, consider the option of an ordinary double bed.

You can make the simplest design by taking a sheet of plywood with a thickness of 18 mm and a size of 3 m by 1.5 m. It is recommended to purchase plywood with laminated coating, which is more practical, and plywood furniture will look beautiful. Immediately you need to cut off 2 m and leave for the bottom. The remaining 1.5 m will be used for the headboard. Cut points need to be sanded.

If the plywood does not have lamination, then the front of the headboard should be covered with stain and varnish, possibly in several layers. Be sure to dry completely before installation.

Now it's time to assemble the frame. To do this, you need to take 2 beams 2 m long and 2 beams 1.5 m each. The structure is knocked down at the corners, minus the width of each beam on the sides. After all, the width of the bed should be 1.5 m, but 2 longitudinal beams with their own width will be attached to the sides of the transverse bars with a length of 1.5 m, by which the width of the frame will increase.

Also, as shown in the photo below, do-it-yourself plywood furniture can be assembled in different designs. It is possible to manufacture a larger and more complex frame to obtainwide double bed.

When the frame is ready, the prepared bottom is attached to it - at the corners of the structure and in the middle of the longitudinal bars with bolts. Next, install the legs from the remnants of the timber.

The assembled bed is primed with a special acrylic-based primer. Further, the entire structure or its elements are covered with paint. You can completely open the bed with varnish or other paintwork.

The last step will be facing the head of the bed, if you do not like its appearance or you want to put foam on it. Upholstery fabric is selected taking into account the interior of the room and fastened with a stapler.

Children's plywood furniture

Children often need furniture tailored to their height or personal wishes, which is not always available in the store. For a growing child, a children's table with a chair always remains relevant. It's easy to make.

The table will have a U-shape. Two identical side parts are transferred from the drawing to plywood and cut out. Do the same with the surface of the table. In the far part above and below the seat of the child, two tightening strips should be provided for the strength of the structure. They are fixed with self-tapping screws screwed into the upper and lower parts of both ends of the slats. A tabletop is placed on top of the ends of the side parts and fastened with 4 self-tapping screws. The chair is also made in any form, based on the growth of the child. The legs of the chair can follow the design of the table. With the help of central perpendicular slots from side to center, they are inserted crosswise into each other. It remains to attach the seat to the upper part, process the cut places and paint to taste.

Kitchen furniture

Whatever you want to bring to life, designer furniture made of plywood is able to perform any task and achieve the perfection of the environment.

Plywood bench

Relates to the simplest designs. First, a rack frame is made according to the principle of the English letter “h” from two or three parts, depending on the length of the bench. Also, these parts can be cut fromwhole plywood. All of them are connected at the corners with slats, forming the frame of the bench. After that, a seat with a back is cut out of plywood and attached to the frame. Naturally, all plywood furniture should be treated, including saw cuts.

Fittings

The choice of fittings is usually given little attention. Often it becomes a way to save money. After all, you can always put a loop or handle on a smaller and cheaper door. And in vain, because not only the reliable operation of all mechanisms and parts of furniture, but also the duration of their operation depends on the fittings. As elsewhere, fittings are by no means a secondary issue in the manufacture of plywood furniture. We know that the devil is in the details! Therefore, it is worth analyzing in general terms what you should pay attention to when choosing it:

  • You should buy accessories from a manufacturer with an unblemished reputation. It never comes cheap.
  • You can save only on design. For example, if a hinge manufacturer is identified, which is the leader in the production of accessories on the world market, you can safely choose its not the most expensive products. The principles of operation of the accessories of this manufacturer will still remain similar, the design will be different. Because of it, the price difference can increase fivefold.
  • Although the fittings are often invisible, they can be well visible. Sometimes it can completely break out of the interior. Do not break the overall design for the sake of economy.
  • If children or "dynamic" people will use the furniture, then you should worry about all sorts of things in advanceclosers and spring hinges to mitigate the effects of vigorous use. Accordingly, these bonuses can be dispensed with if the furniture is used carefully and carefully.

As you can see, do-it-yourself plywood furniture at home can be made quite easily, it is durable and practical. Not only that, it will fit perfectly into your home decor.
