In order for the roof of a country house to effectively perform its functions, protecting the interior of the house from adverse weather factors, it is, of course, necessary to assemble it with strict observance of all the required technologies. Of course, when erecting a roof, special attention should be paid to the installation of rafters, insulation and sheathing. But it is equally important to properly mount various additional elements of this part of the building. For example, certain recommendations should be followed when installing gable roof overhangs.
Destination
Actually, a pediment is a part of the roof that encloses the attic from the street from the end facades of the building. Such structures are mounted on houses with all forms of roofs, built from any materials. In brick and block structures, pediments can be assembled both from boards and from the same material from which the box is built. In chopped structures, they are often made of logs or timber and serve as a continuation of the walls.
In panel houses, this element of the roof structure is almost always hemmed with a board. Made using thisAt the same time, gables are insulated using, for example, mineral wool. This is usually done when they want to equip a residential attic or attic in a country house. On the reverse side, the pediment in this case can be sheathed with OSB boards, plywood or any other sheet materials.
The roof in a country house serves primarily, of course, to protect the interior from wind, rain, dust and snow. However, the roofs of buildings perform another important function. Properly assembled roof additionally covers the facades of the building from rain and snow.
The long walls of private houses from getting wet in bad weather are protected by cornice overhangs. The end facades and pediments remain vulnerable to precipitation. So that these parts of the building also do not get wet in the rain, gable overhangs are provided on the roof. Often, such designs are also complemented by a visor.
Definition
The gable overhangs are called parts of the roof slopes that protrude beyond the plane of the end enclosing structures of the attics. Peaks in the arrangement of such protective systems are assembled along the upper line of the box at the level of the cornices. In gable roofs, gable overhangs and visors form a triangle in the front plane.
Designs of this type can not only effectively protect the end of the building from precipitation. Often they are also an important architectural element of the house, giving it a more solid and presentable look.
Are there any regulations
When arranging gable roof overhangs with their own hands, they pay attention mainlyonly on the design of the truss system, the material used for its sheathing, the size of the building and its architectural features. There are no standards in terms of assembling this part of the roof.
Such overhangs can be carried out beyond the gables to any distance. Most often, the length of this part of the roof structure in private houses is 40-80 cm. In most cases, when using any technology, the width of the gable roof overhangs is chosen equal to the length of the cornices. This allows you to assemble a more harmonious and aesthetic roof.
Arrangement methods
Sometimes the roofs of suburban buildings are erected without gable overhangs. But they mount in this way mainly only the roofs of country houses built in the architectural style of minimalism. In all other cases, gable overhangs are almost always present in the roof structure of country buildings. At the same time, they can be equipped using the following technologies:
- by removing the crate;
- removing the truss system outside the building.
The first technology is usually used when light roofing materials are used for roof sheathing. It can be, for example, a metal tile, a professional sheet, a flexible tile. It is this technology for arranging gable roof overhangs that is most often used in the construction of country houses. The popularity of this technique is explained primarily by the simplicity of execution and low cost. When using it, only a slight increase in the consumption of lumberand roof sheathing.
The dimensions of the gable roof overhangs when using this installation technology are usually not too large. In this case, they are taken out most often at a distance of up to 50 cm. The disadvantage of this method is, first of all, that when using it, the protective structure may subsequently sag.
When building very large private houses, as well as when using heavy materials for roofing, overhangs are arranged on rafters. The outstretched legs from the side of the gables in this case are mounted on elongated powerful mauerlats, ridge supports and intermediate paving elements.
Gable overhangs of this type can go beyond the plane of the walls for a considerable distance. In most cases, when using this technology, they are carried out by 40-80 cm. Sometimes such gable roof overhangs have larger dimensions. But such structures, protruding far beyond the end plane of the building, are usually already a full-fledged roof, for example, a balcony or terrace.
Technology for arranging overhangs on the crate
In this case, the extreme rafters are located at the corners of the building box. When arranging the overhang, the crate is attached to them not end-to-end, but with the extension forward. Next, the roof is sheathed with the selected facing material using standard technology.
At the next stage, the overhang crate is hemmed from below. The end of the roof is closed with a complete tong or just a metal profile.
Very often the roofs of houses, among other things,equipped with water drains. In this case, the design of the gable overhang on the crate is somewhat complicated. A special frame is mounted in its lower part. Subsequently, a bracket for the gutter is attached to it.
How to make a gable roof overhang on outrigger rafters
This technique is also used in the construction of country houses quite often. When using this technology, the length of the overhang will be equal to the extension of the rafters. The legs in this case are mounted in the usual way. After installing the rafters, the roof is insulated and waterproofed. Next, the crate is stuffed and the roofing material is installed with filing, including the gable overhang.
A feature of insulated roofs is that they are often made ventilated. Therefore, when filing such overhangs in the future, special holes are usually left for air circulation.
Sometimes in country houses they use a more simplified removal of the gable protective structure on the harness or Mauerlat. In this case, boards of the same length as the rafters, but of a smaller section, are installed in the extreme plane of the overhang. With the last legs in the slope, they are connected by several crossbar boards.
When using this technique, less durable structures are obtained than when using the technology of taking out the rafters. However, this method still allows you to save some on the material.
At the final stage, when applying this technique, the gable overhang of the roof is also finished with an end plate. This element allows you to protect the board or rafter from adverseenvironmental influences. An end plate for a gable overhang can be made, for example, from a profiled sheet. Stuff it using self-tapping screws.
How overhangs can be hemmed
To mask the rafters and lathing from the bottom of the gable overhangs, it is allowed to use different materials. Sheath this roof element:
- lumber;
- PVC panels;
- PVC siding (soffits);
- flat metal;
- wall siding;
- profiled sheet.
In some cases, gable roof overhangs are left unlined. This is done when building, for example, small cottages. Also, sometimes only the crate is masked at the overhangs. This technology helps to make the appearance of the roof complete and at the same time original.
Use lumber
Most often, the gable overhangs of the roofs of country houses are hemmed with wood. In most cases, lining or just a cut processed board is used for this purpose. In the latter case, since the tree is able to expand and contract with changes in humidity, the material is not mounted closely, but sparsely. The distance between the overhang planks should be about 4 mm. In the future, these slots will also serve as ventilation holes.
Lining is also mounted using a special technology when lining. The tongues of the lamellas in this case are not completely driven into the grooves. Of course, beforethe beginning of the filing procedure, lumber is necessarily treated with fire-fighting and anti-rotten compounds. This allows you to significantly extend the life of the cladding and reduce the risk of fire.
PVC application
In small houses (for example, summer cottages), sheathing of gable roof overhangs can also be done with ordinary hollow plastic panels. This method of cladding is currently considered the cheapest. They are attached to the elements of the rafter system and the pediment of the PVC panel in this case in the usual way - using self-tapping screws. The disadvantage of this type of filing is primarily the low strength of the material. In addition, PVC panels are not recommended for finishing overhangs on the south side of the house. Unfortunately, this material is not resistant to UV radiation. In the sun, such panels will quickly collapse.
More expensive, but at the same time, a reliable option for sheathing for overhangs are soffits. This is the name of PVC slats designed for outdoor use. At the moment, this is the most modern type of filing for the gable roof overhang. In the photo below, you can see just such an option for facing the ledges of slopes in a private house. Such material is more durable than panels. In addition, it is insensitive to solar radiation.
On the market today there are also perforated spotlights. This option today can be considered the best answer to the question of how to sew gable roof overhangs. When using such panels, there is no need for additionalarrangement of ventilation holes.
Using siding and corrugated board
This material is durable and aesthetically pleasing. Gable roof overhangs are hemmed with siding, usually when the same cladding was used to finish other building envelopes.
Profiled and ordinary metal sheets can also be considered a good material option for sheathing the protective end ledge of the roof. This material is strong and durable, not afraid of temperature changes. Profiled sheet and ordinary metal are fastened to roof structures when sheathing overhangs on self-tapping screws with rubber gaskets.
Some disadvantage of finishing gable roof overhangs using siding and steel sheet is that in this case you have to cut the ventilation holes yourself. Unfortunately, materials of this variety, designed specifically for sheathing overhangs, are not commercially available today.
Filing the gable roof overhang with spotlights
Next, for example, consider the method of lower finishing of overhangs with PVC slats. This material on the market is relatively new. However, he has already managed to win quite a lot of popularity among summer residents. Overhangs are clad with other materials using approximately the same technology.
So, what is the method of filing gable roof overhangs with spotlights? The cladding is done using these UV resistant panels as follows:
- on both sides of the overhang, special profiles are attached to the screws that come with the spotlights;
- plastic lamellas are cut into pieces with a width of 15 mm less than the distance between the profiles;
- cut pieces are attached on both sides to the profiles with self-tapping screws.
When performing the filing of gable roof overhangs with boards, slats are usually used instead of a profile. With the use of the same elements, PVC panels, siding, profiled sheets can also be mounted. Also, a metal profile is often used to fasten such materials.
Mounting the visor
So, we found out how to make and how to hem the gable overhang of the roof. Such designs of the roof end protect against precipitation usually very well. But the wall during the rain, if any, can still get wet. To protect it, therefore, an end visor is often additionally arranged. This element can be mounted, for example, on mini-rafters.
The visor assembly technology in this case will look like this:
- from a thick board cut off pieces with a length equal to the width of the future visor;
- cut pieces are attached at an angle to the front posts of the roof frame or to the strapping;
- supports for rafters of the required length are cut out of the bars (depending on the angle of inclination of the visor);
- grooves are cut at the ends of the bars with a width equal to the thickness of the mini-rafter board;
- mini rafterare fixed in the grooves of the supports with self-tapping screws;
- the other end of the props is attached to the wall of the house.
Further, a crate is stuffed into the mini-rafter in two rows. For its installation, a rather thick board is usually used. In the future, builders will walk along the visor when sheathing the gable.
The ends of the lathing are additionally screwed to the gable overhang. At the final stage, the visor is sheathed. Most often, this element is lined with the same material that was used to finish the roof.
In order for water to flow into the gap between the visor and the structures of the building itself during operation, it is also desirable to install a galvanized iron apron in this place. Such an ebb is usually screwed to the pediment and the crate of the visor. At the same time, for tightness, a rubber gasket is placed under each screw.
